What we build
Paver patios sized to how you actually use the yard: dining, seating, a clear path to the door. Laid on a compacted granular base with edge restraint so the pattern stays tight instead of creeping outward after a few Cornwall winters.
Driveway pavers carry vehicle loads, so the base goes deeper than a patio and gets compacted in lifts. We remove the old asphalt or concrete ourselves, correct the grade away from the garage, and finish with a proper edge.
The first thing anyone sees. Front walks, landings and steps built to a comfortable rise and run, with the paver cuts kept clean at the borders and around the porch.
Segmental block and armour stone walls built with a compacted footing, clear stone backfill, geotextile and a drain line. Water behind a wall is what pushes it over, so drainage is designed in before the first course goes down.
Solid slab granite and armour stone steps set on compacted stone, levelled individually. No hollow risers, no rocking treads after the first spring thaw.
Built-in fire pits, seat walls, pillars and lighting sleeves run while the base is open, so nothing has to be cut back into finished stone later.
Pool surrounds with the slope pulled away from the water, coping set true, and non-slip paver options. Coordinated with your pool installer so the deck goes in at the right stage.
Water in the basement usually starts with grade at the surface. We own the excavators, so re-grading, swales, catch basins and downspout lines get handled as part of the hardscape, not subbed out.

Every paver patio looks good the day it is finished. The difference shows up in year two, and all of it is buried under the stone.
Cornwall frost drives roughly four feet down. Water trapped in the base freezes, expands about nine percent, and lifts whatever sits on top. Come spring it drains away and the surface drops, rarely back to where it started. Do that thirty times a winter and a shallow patio becomes a rollercoaster. You do not beat frost, you give the water somewhere to go.
Base depth is the single number that separates a ten-year patio from a three-year one. We install 6–8" of compacted granular under patios and walkways, and 10–12" under driveways where vehicles load the surface. Anything laid on 3" of stone and a lot of sand will look identical on handover day and nothing alike in year two.
Most of SD&G sits on clay. Without a woven fabric between the subgrade and the base stone, the stone slowly migrates down into the clay and the clay pumps up into the stone. The base thins out from below where nobody can see it. The fabric costs very little and keeps the base a base.
Every quote we write specifies the base depth. Ask the other guys for theirs in writing.
